As the cold winter blues start to melt away and you begin to feel refreshed, rejuvenated and ready for a fresh start. It may be wise to take a moment to regroup, reprioritise and reinvent yourself. Spring is a time for renewal and the perfect opportunity to take stock of what you may need to change in your life. We’re identifying some of the steps you can take to spring clean your life and get yourself ready to finish this year strong.
Why Spring Clean Your Life?
By taking a look at your life and identifying the areas you are most happy in and the areas you would like to improve, you will be in control of living a happier and healthier life.
Spring cleaning your life enables you to truly take note of what you may need to change. Often we’re just going through the motions of life, filling our days with the usual tasks and activities. This is when we get caught up in our mundane day-to-day routine and don’t actually realise that we may not be truly happy. Or we may not even realise that we’re just one power move away from changing our lives.
Steps to Spring Clean Your Life
1. Make some time for yourself and reflect
Before you even begin the process, take some time for yourself. Sit and reflect on the various aspects of your life. Be it your career, relationships or goals you haven’t reached.
Take the time to analyse these areas, identify where you’re happiest, what needs improvement and what you need to alter altogether. This is also the perfect opportunity to journal your thoughts to clearly identify what you need to change.
2. Clear out your social media
Our social media accounts can become inundated with ‘fitness motivation’ accounts, influencers or frustrating people we went to school with (you know who).
Now is the perfect time to go through your social media and remove the people and accounts that don’t add value to your life. Remove any accounts that bring any negativity into your day and concentrate on allowing only positive influences to take up your mental space. Besides, it’s healthy to have a good social media clean out every once in a while.
3. Find a way to be more active
There are a few steps to this process that may seem like they don’t directly relate to a ‘spring clean’ but these steps are vital. Spring cleaning your life means to find ways to start over, to bring more positivity your way and to improve aspects of your life that you don’t enjoy.
This is why finding ways to be more active is an important aspect to spring cleaning your life. By being more active, you feel better, you are healthier and it puts you in a positive mindset. This doesn’t mean that you need to go to the gym at least four times a week, but you can find fun ways to be more active. Activities like walking your dog, joining a dance class, finding a friend to jog with twice a week. Whatever you choose, will positively impact your mental and physical health.
4. Focus on your health
This should be a priority whenever you feel the need to start fresh because your health should come first, always.
Find easy ways to prioritise your health every day. This could be things like prepping your lunch for work the night before so that it’s ready and waiting for you when you start the next day. This will eliminate the need to consume copious amounts of snacks or buy takeaways. Or you can increase your water intake during the day – especially now that we’re going into warmer weather.
Subtle changes like this can have a very big impact on your health and wellness in the long run.
5. Look back at your New Year’s Resolutions
The beginning of the year is when we’re the most inspired to change everything and start anew. This is when we come up with our resolutions for the year. These are things like “I will workout every day” or “I will quit smoking”- whatever they are, we often forget about them halfway through the year.
This is the perfect opportunity to go into the new season, ready to fulfil or reflect on the New Year’s resolutions you made and to check in on your milestones. It’s also a great opportunity to see what resolutions are actually doable and which ones may need tweaking to suit the goals you outlined in step 1.
6. Declutter your space
Starting fresh means cleaning out unnecessary junk in your home. A good clean up of our homes, workspaces and even cars can reveal a lot of things we just don’t need. A thorough sort-out-and-throw-out session can be very therapeutic, as the saying goes – “tidy home, tidy mind”.
7. Start something new
Trying something new or something you have been too afraid to try can be incredibly liberating. This is a great way to learn something new about yourself and to step out of your comfort zone.
You don’t need to do anything too wild but find something that may turn into a beautiful escape.
Spring cleaning your life doesn’t need to be a major task. This is something you can do to merely take cognisance of the life you have and ensuring that you’re living to your full potential. There is no point in living a mediocre life filled with unnecessary negativity and judgement. This is why you need to take note of what is working and what isn’t and change what you need to.
